Sensory receptors are specialized cells that detect stimuli and transduce them into nerve impulses. There are two main categories of sensory receptors: specialized nerve endings that detect general sensory information, and independent receptor cells like epithelial cells that detect special senses. Sensory receptors are also classified by their location, the type of stimulus they detect, and their structure.
